“Mock Trial is a vehicle to teach how a legal system functions and the purpose of how the system works. The team teaches students the role of attorney, witness, and judge in a courtroom setting.”(Dr. Scott) ONU’s Mock Trial Team formed in 1988-1989 as an extra-curricular club, and Dr. Joann Scott served as the club’s advisor. ONU’s Mock Trial club started with one small team and grew to a three or four team club. In the third or fourth year of the club, the university allowed them to form a class and gain academic credits. The team continued to grow and flourish in the early 2000’s and in 2007-2008 and in 2008-2009 the team attended the American Mock Trial Associations National Championship. The Team placed eighth in the 2008-2009 championship. From 2003- 2017 the team has continually brought home individual and team awards. Most important the Team has taught students how to confidently present themselves in a courtroom, while continually improving their public speaking skills.
